Carlton Enters Classified Ads Market

Carlton Communications became the first broadcaster to move into the classified advertising market today with the acquisition of a 20% stake in online recruitment company PeopleBank. The £2.5 million deal will provide cash for expansion of the successful online exchange and allow for its promotion through Carlton’s TV services.
Commenting on the deal Steven Cain, CEO of Carlton said: “E-recruitment is one of the fastest growing areas on the internet…Combining PeopleBank’s already significant online business with Carlton’s ability to access mass audiences across television, cinema, video and other media will produce such an enormous recruitment forum that employers and candidates will find us indispensable.”
The acquisition is seen as part of Carlton’s continual investment in the internet announced earlier this year (see Carlton Communications Announces Ten-Point Plan). The group has three websites covering games (www.jamba.co.uk), films (www.popcorn.co.uk) and food (www.simplyfood.co.uk) and recently appointed Rupert Miles, former director of Beeb.com to oversee its online interests (see Carlton Poaches beeb.com Head To Drive Interactive Media).
