Carlton Expands Its US Interests

Carlton Communications is to acquire a further 50% stake in Hamdon Entertainment, giving the group sole control of the Los Angeles-based business, which is the one of the largest worldwide co-producers, financiers and distributors of made-for-television movies. The acquisition is part of a ten-point plan announced by the group in May this year (see Carlton Communications Announces Ten-Point Plan) which stated aims to double Carlton’s TV output and develop the brand name internationally.
Hamdon, which also owns an extensive library of made-for-television movies, will be renamed Carlton America and will be expanded as a “telefilm” business. It will also work with Carlton International to develop and co-produce other television programming including drama, comedy and children’s.
Steven Cain, chief executive of Carlton said: “Stepping up production is a key part of our strategic plan. By expanding in US film and television production we can help meet the growing demand around the world for quality television.”
