Carlton Invests In Cinema Media

Carlton Communications plc has today announced the £58.5 million acquisition of Cinema Media. With cinema audiences increasing over the last decade, and with more multiplex cinemas being built, Carlton see this as an opportunity to capitalise on cinema advertising with the aim to expand in other areas, such as the video market.

Michael Green, chairman of Carlton Communications commented: “The growth of multiplex cinemas is boosting audiences and helping advertisers to reach young people. We will use our extensive customer base to raise the profile of advertising on the big screen. Cinema Media significantly enhances the range of outlets we can offer advertisers across the country.”

Cinema Media controls 80 per cent of cinema advertising in the UK and has contracts with various cinema chains to sell advertising shown before the main presentation. The company has recently acquired contracts with UK video distributors to sell advertising on pre-recorded videos and expansion has continued in this area..

Cinema Media will operate alongside Carlton UK Sales who sell air time for Carlton, Central and various cable channels. The company will also be able to utilise the customer and research facilities of Carlton television.
