Carlton Plans New Cable Channel
Carlton Television has confirmed that it is planning a new satellite and cable channel which will focus on food and lifestyle.
The channel, tentatively called “Carlton Food Network”, is due to launch in September and will fill Carlton Select’s daytime slot which is currently vacant from 1pm till 5pm. 70% of the programming will be original and made in the UK. Big-name TV chefs are lined up to feature on the channel as well as chefs from some of London’s more famous restaurants like Conran’s Mezzo.
Viewers will be able to join a cookery ‘club’ via the channel and it is planned that advertisers will use the club for direct-marketing purposes. Carlton Food Network will be a rival for Granada’s Food and Wine which will launch in October (Newsline 05/06) as part of its multi-channel foray into non-terrestrial TV.
