Carlton To Launch UK Gold Rival

According to press reports Carlton Communications is planning to start a vintage programme channel just days after Granada announced that it was to do the same. Programmes likely to feature include Soldier, Soldier and Inspector Morse – Carlton has access to the Central library, as well as their own.

Michael Green, Carlton chairman said last week, “The multiplicity of entertainment channels that will be available to viewers with the expansion of broadcast, satellite and cable systems means that demand for programme material will grow substantially. We intend to be a major owner and supplier.”

Analysts see the move into new media as a natural step for terrestrial broadcasters. Lorna Tilbian of Panmure Gordon says; “They need the distribution to push their programming through.”
