The digital consortium Switchdigital has announced an addition to its list of shareholders. Carphone Warehouse is to join the Wireless Group, Clear Channel International and Ginger Media Group as part owner and retail partner.
Switchdigital, which unites Talk Radio and Virgin Radio, lost the bid for the first digital multiplex licence for London earlier this year (see Capital And EMAP Win First London Digital Licence) but intends to apply for the second licence for the area, due to be announced next spring. The group also has plans to apply for digital multiplex licences in Central Scotland, North East and North West England, West Midlands and Severn Estuary regional multiplexes.
Chairman of Switch Digital Kelvin MacKenzie said: “This is a stunning new addition to our team. Once more we have demonstrated both the innovation and commitment that is essential to get digital radio successfully off the ground in London.
