The annual inflation rate fell to 2.3% in July, down from 2.6% in June, according to the Retail Prices Index released this morning. The actual figure, taking 1985 as the base, was 152.2. The underlying rate, excluding mortgage interest payments, fell to 2.2% from 2.4% – the lowest level since 1975.

Bass has signed a £700,000 sponsorship deal with The Word to support coverage of the FA Carling Premiership in the participating regional newspapers throughout the season.
The £71m bid by Emap for Trans World Communications has been declared unconditional. The acceptance of Owen Oysten who owns 22.1%, together with acceptances from a further 1% of shares, gives Emap control of 52.7% of the equity. The cash offer will remain open.
