Celebrity Big Brother Suffers From Reality TV Fatigue
![]()
Audience figures for Celebrity Big Brother have fallen to an average of 4.2 million, a considerable drop from the last series.
Although the current run had a promising start, with a peak audience of 7.2 million and considerable coverage in the red-tops, the format’s popularity seems to be faltering. Commentators have suggested that the show has lost its novelty value, and there are simply too many reality TV programmes to compete with at the moment.
However, despite the fall year-on-year, the programme is still providing Channel 4 with almost twice the number of viewers it usually achieves. According to Channel 4, the show is also attracting a lucrative audience; 38% of its regular viewers are young and upmarket and 42% are classified ABC1.
In contrast to Celebrity Big Brother’s diminishing audiences, Fame Academy, the BBC’s much ridiculed foray into reality television has recovered from a stuttering start (see BBC’s Fame Academy Suffers From Pop Stars Fatigue) and is steadily gaining audience share.
