Channel 4 Appoints New Head Of Corporate Development

Channel 4 has appointed Michael Hodgson as its new head of corporate development, with responsibility for forging business relationships with third parties.

Hodgson, who is currently investment director of the media team at venture capitalist firm, 3i, will take up his new post at the end of September. He will report to Rob Woodward, Channel 4’s commercial director and managing director of 4 Ventures.

The new position will see Hodgson oversee the development of new businesses, replacing Gerry Bastable, who was appointed as Channel 4’s first head of corporate development in October 2002, but who quit the channel in April this year.

Hodgson joined 3i in 1995 and has been responsible for a number of high profile deals including the £67 million buy-out of Pinewood Studios by a consortium led by former Channel 4 chief executive, Michael Grade.

Prior to joining 3i Hodgson ran his own business for 3 years, publishing a daily newsletter service, Commodities Daily, from Hong Kong. He has also worked for Ernst & Young in London and Paris, where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant.

Commenting on Hodson’s appointment, Woodward said: “Channel 4’s portfolio of new businesses has matured to the point of break even and we are now planning the next stage of development. Michael has an excellent track record of deal making and portfolio management within the media sector and he will be a strong addition to the Channel 4 management team.”

Hodgson added: “Channel 4 has worked hard over the last five years to establish a multi-media business model and now feels well placed to take advantage of fresh opportunities in the media sector. My focus will be on identifying new projects that are consistent with the channel’s values and appealing to its core audiences, while offering a clear return to the core channel to help fund its public service provision in the future.”

Earlier today Five announced the appointment of Dan Chambers as its new director of programmes, replacing the outgoing Kevin Lygo, who is leaving to return to Channel 4 (see Five Picks Chambers As New Director Of Programmes).
