Channel 4 Head Rules Out A Move To The BBC

Channel 4 chief executive Mark Thompson has categorically denied that he intends to apply for the position of BBC director general following the resignation of Greg Dyke in January.

Speaking today at a presentation of the broadcaster’s 2003 report and accounts Thompson was quizzed by the audience on his intentions towards the position but remained defiant, stating: “I intend to stay at channel 4. I have got the job I want so I’m staying here. I will turn down any approach from the BBC.”

Rumours began to circulate in February that Thompson may be cherry picked to lead the Corporation after Greg Dyke’s resignation in the wake of the Hutton enquiry. However, the Channel 4 chief dismissed the rumours, insisting that he would not be applying and would not be tempted if approached directly (see Greg Dyke Steps Down As BBC Director General).

Speculation surrounding the appointment of the BBC’s new director general has been growing steadily since January, with the Corporation’s head of television, Jana Bennett, head of radio, Jenny Abramsky, and head of factual programming, John Willis all reported to be interested in the position.

The process of selecting a new director general had been part way to completion earlier this month, but all progress was scrapped when Michael Grade was confirmed as BBC Chairman and restarted the selection process (see BBC Confirms Grade As New Chairman).

Last week Channel 4 announced the annual results of its media and digital operations group, 4 Ventures. With an optimistic outlook the channel predicted its entertainment offshoot, E4 is due to break even this year, with its movie offering’s, the Film Four channels, due to follow suit in 2005 (see Channel 4 Planning Raft Of Digital Channels).

Channel 4 also announced that it is planning to launch several new digital channels in efforts to corner specialist markets and increase overall audience share in addition to the much anticipated More 4, due to launch later this year on the Freeview platform.
