Channel 4 is set to open up sponsorship opportunities for its most popular programmes. It will mean that programmes such as Brookside, Friends and Frasier will able to carry a sponsor for the first time. Up until now few programmes have been available for sponsorship on the channel, the Film on Four season being the most popular with sponsors including Nokia and presently the Guardian newspaper *Guardian Sponsors Film On Four.
Sponsorship on Channel 4 is currently reaching around 1% of its total business. The channel is hoping to find a sponsor for Friends in time for its repeat run which starts in January. Other programmes that are said to be available for sponsorship include The Girlie Show, Lonely Planet and Football Italia.
