Channel 4 has announced a sponsorship deal with electronics manufacturer Sony, which will see the firm’s iconic Walkman brand sponsor the broadcaster’s fortcoming UK Music Hall of Fame.
The six-week deal will link Sony’s new hard disc HDI Network Walkman with Channel 4’s run down of contemporary musicians and artists from the past five decades. The show will cover a different decade each week, with viewers able to vote for the artists they believe are the greatest music legends of all time.
The sponsorship, which begins on 10 October, spans peak time programming and consists of five two hour shows, as well as the live final recorded at London’s Hackney Empire in which five acts will be inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame. The deal includes the broadcast sponsorship, online sponsorship and sponsorship of the live final event.
The move is designed to promote Sony’s first hard disc based walkman, a device similar to Apple’s iPod personal music player, through association with the best music and iconic performers.
Commenting on the sponsorship David Andrews, Sony’s personal audio product manager, stated: “Walkman has been synonymous with music for 25 years and Sony is very excited to be sponsoring the UK’s inaugural Music Hall of Fame. This is something that is sure to capture the imagination of the public and we are confident it will provide Sony tremendous opportunity to leverage this brand association to promote our Network Walkman range of products.”
Channel 4 recently launched its own music chart show to rival the BBC’s iconic Top Of The Pops, in the form of a Saturday morning music show counting down the chart as used by commercial radio stations. The show is based on the recently launched Hit 40 UK music chart, a collaborative poll operated by commercial radio companies, and forms part of Channel 4’s teen-orientated T4 programming strand (see Channel 4 To Have A Pop At BBC Music Programming).
