It is widely reported this weekend that the Government is planning to privatise Channel 4 as the latest part of their privatisation programme; the plans are expected to form part of the Tories’ election manifesto. Privatisation of Channel 4 could raise £1.5 billion for the Treasury.
Channel 4 however, has promised to fight such a move, saying it would be impossible to meet the terms of its remit; pressure from shareholders would force the channel to appeal to mass audiences to attract more advertising.
