Channel 4 To Challenge Watchdog

C4 was yesterday given permission to seek a High Court ruling that the Broadcasting Complaints Commission has no jurisdiction to act on a complaint from a parish council in Derbyshire.

The complaint concerns an episode of The Brief, the legal series, which gave “an unfair portrayal of the local community”. C4 claims the commission is interpreting its remit too widely, and that if the comission is allowed to hear the case then any programme alleging disreputable behaviour in a particular area will would give rise to a mass of complaints.
