Channel 4 To Pay Out £40m
According to a report by broker Smith New Court, Channel 4 will have to make a payment of £40 million to the other ITV companies, following its strong performance in the first year of selling its own advertising.
The report gives Channel 4 18.6% of total terrestrial TV advertising, beating its target by £80 million. The formula was devised to protect the channel in case of not selling enough. If the report is correct, Central could gain £6.2 million, Carlton £6.1 million, LWT £4.8 million, Granada £4.4 million and YTTV £4.3m.
Channel 4 cannot release any figures until the year is over and ITV declare their final figures. Channel 4 expect the YTTV controversy to reduce the ITV total, thus increasing the payment from them.
However Chris Griffin Beal, C4’s Press Officer, told MediaTel that the figures in the report by Smith New Court were not far off their own estimates.
