Channel 5 Augments Football Coverage
Channel 5 has secured the rights to show Liverpool’s pre-season friendly against Inter Milan on Tuesday 4 August. The match will pit Michael Owen against Ronaldo, perhaps the two most talked-about players during the World Cup.
Earlier on the same day, the channel will also show Chelsea’s friendly against Atletico Madrid in Arnhem, Holland, at 5:30pm. C5 also has coverage of Leeds’ match against Lazio on Friday 31 July at 8:15pm.
The fledgling broadcaster has also caused a stir by securing the live rights to three of England’s away games in the Euro 2000 competition build up. CLT-ufa, the company which owns the broadcasting rights in all of the countries in which the games are being played, is also a 29% stakeholder in Channel 5 (see C5 Shoots And Scores For Euro 2000). The matches are against Poland, Bulgaria and Luxembourg.
C5 will also exclusively broadcast live a number of Scotland and Wales away matches. Sky has the rights to all of England’s home games in the competition. ITV has the highlights rights to England’s home matches and the away game against Sweden (see ITV Adds To England Highlight Rights).
