Despite pending legal proceedings regarding the granting of its licence, Channel 5 Broadcasting has signed a tranmission contract with NTL, which will ensure transmission will be ready for next January.
NTL will handle both the distribution and transmission of Channel 5; the two 10 year contracts are worth around £100 million. Distribution of signals to the transmitters will be made via satellite; all the uplink and transmitter systems will be built and installed by NTL in time for the start of national transmission next January.
Ian Ritchie, Chief Executive of Channel 5 Broadcasting said, “We felt that there is an advantage in one supplier handling every stage of transmission. We were impressed by NTL’s ability to provide satellite distribution as well as transmission services with a delivery timetable fundamental to our start date.”
