Channel 5 Launches Pilot Retuning Programme
Channel 5, Britain’s newest terrestrial channel due to launch in January 1997, will begin a pilot retuning programme in Wallington, Surrey today.
This area is one of nine across the UK which will experience interference in its Channel 5 reception. It is hoped that the pilot scheme will enable Channel 5 to evaluate retuning plans before launching a national retuning programme later this summer. Today’s retune will last for two months and initially involve 22 authorised Channel 5 retuners visiting 10,000 homes in the Wallington area.
Under the terms of the licence from the ITC Channel 5 has to visit around ten million homes in the UK to check whether TV equipment needs to be adjusted. The national retuning campaign starts in August and will involve 6000 specially trained technicians to complete the task.
