Channel 5 More Difficult Than Predicted

Channel 5 More Difficult Than Predicted

At their meeting today, members of the Independent Television Commission received the Government’s decision on the frequencies which would be available to the Commission for the purpose of advertising a Channel 5 licence.

One of the two frequencies originally approved for C5 will no longer be made available; this reduces the guaranteed coverage of such a channel to around 50% of the UK population. The ITC says that the prospects for launching C5 successfully are now more difficult than they would otherwise have been.

The Commission will now consider whether the government’s conclusions do form a basis on which the ITC can proceed to re-advertise the licence, and if so, when and on what terms. A decision should be made by September.

The ITC has also said that it intends to discuss with the Secretary of State for National Heritage the implications of Government’s digital terrestrial television plans for the commercial television sector as a whole.
