Channel 5 was celebrating yesterday, having captured 5.8% of the prime time audience. Agency estimates show that 2.6 million people tuned into 5’s opening show on Sunday night and 1.8 million viewers stayed on to watch the first episode of the channel’s soap Family Affairs.

As is only to be expected, the figures decrease as the day draws to an end and the number of children tuned in fell. 0.6 million adults watched the channel’s first documentary, Two Little Boys and 0.9 million adults watched the one-off satirical drama Hospital! The much hyped evening film, Beyond Fear, was watched by 1.5 million adults. 100,000 kids stayed up to watch the last hour of the channel’s first day on-air, and they were joined by 0.7 million adults.

Newsline can confirm that a disproportionate number of viewers were in the 16-34 age group. As this is 5’s main target audience, the channel is said to be especially pleased with this result.
