Channel 5 Retuning Details Announced

Channel 5 today held a press conference on its retuning programme. Channel 5 will be visiting nearly 10 million homes in one of the biggest public service operations ever undertaken in the UK. In a campaign titled Give Me 5 more than 7,000 Channel 5 retuners will be moblised, visiting 9.6 million homes in 5 months before the new national television channel goes on air next year.

A personalised direct mail leaflet will be sent to householders in retuning areas, each containing a security number unique to them and giving full details of the free service and how to make retuning appointments.

Channel 5 has entered into agreement with Granada Service and Thorn Homeserve (Radio Rentals), plus Blockbuster Video, to implement and support the retuning programme. Channel 5’s target, under the terms of its licence from the ITC, is visiting and, where necessary, retuning, 90% of homes served by the nine transmitters broadcasting on the UHF channel 37 frequency, by the end of the year.

The service is totally free and can be done relatively quickly and simply by the retuner in the home. Retuners will not remove equipment from the home. A Doorstopper campaign will also be running to protect the eldery from bogus callers.
