Channel 5 Scores With NFL

Channel 5 has cut a new deal with the US National Football League (NFL). C5 will broadcast live coverage of American Football each week on the late night sports show Live and Dangerous, and show higlights on Saturday afternoons.

Robert Charles, 5’s controller of sport, commented: “We are delighted to add another top class sport to our portfolio. NFL has a large and dedicated following in the UK who will now be able to see weekly live coverage of the major game on terrestrial TV for the first time.”

The move will make Channel 5 the UK terrestrial partner of the NFL, following the end of NFL’s 16 year contract with Channel 4 late last month; Channel 4 said it wished to concentrate more on British sport (see Newsline).

NFL Europe’s managing director, Bill Peterson, was full of praise for the old deal with Channel 4, but commented: “What is exciting about our new agreement with Channel 5 are the plans we are putting together to build our game both on-air and off-air. Our goals are two-fold: to continue to appeal to our core fans, while developing new, innovative programmes to attract a new, younger fan base.”

American Football is not the only US sport carried by Channel 5 – it also shows Major League Baseball live twice a week, and Indycar Highlights on Sunday evenings.
