Channel 5 has just announced that it has signed a deal with Chelsea Football Club for exclusive live coverage of the team’s home games in the European Cup Winners Cup. The agreement also includes exclusive rights to Chelsea’s South East Asia tour to Hong Kong, Thailand and Brunei which begins this week. The first match, in Hong Kong against South China FC, will be shown on Thursday night’s Live and Dangerous.
Chelsea managing director, Colin Hutchinson, commented: “We experienced major problems in 1994/95 with broadcasters unable or unwilling to schedule football live on Thursdays. This was frustrating for us and our supporters. Channel 5 are keen to feature football, have some good ideas and showed sharp shooting by signing an option before the cup final!”
