Channel 5 To Have Improved Coverage

Channel 5 is set have its coverage improved following an announcement by the ITC saying that international clearances have now been agreed for enhancements to the channel’s transmitter plan. The improvements should mean that coverage reaches 66% of the UK population.

The enhancements were identified when applications for the fifth terrestrial licence were invited in November 1994. Then, coverage for only around half the population was cleared nationally and internationally, but the plan was to reach approximately 70%.

The package then proposed by the ITC involved new international frequency clearances at 26 transmitter sites. The clearances announced this week cover 19 of these proposals including Winter Hill, which will serve a large part of the North West of England including the cities of Manchester and Liverpool.

The Radiocommunications Agency, part of the DTI, is continuing to pursue the other outstanding clearances.
