Channel 5 To Reach 66% Of Population

The ITC has announced that Channel 5’s coverage should be 66% of the UK population. International clearances for transmissions have been agreed for most of the Channel 5 plan.

When the ITC invited applications for the licence, in November, it was on the basis that C5 would reach approximately 70% of the UK population. At that stage coverage nationally and internationally was only cleared for 50%. The ITC’s improvements consisted of proposals for new international frequency clearances at 26 transmitter sites; the clearances announced now cover 19 of these proposals, and include the Winter Hill transmitter which will serve a major part of the North West of England including Manchester and Liverpool.

Agreement has also been reached to change the transmissions at the Croydon and Sutton Coldfield sites which will mean that substantial numbers of viewers in London and the West Midlands will not need a new aerial to receive C5.

The Radio Communications Agency is continuing to pursue the outstanding clearances.
