Christian Radio Warned Over Content

The Radio Authority has issued London-based Premier Christian Radio a warning after broadcasting programmes that were deemed “intolerant” and “denigratory” to other religious faiths.

The station was found to be in breach of the 1990 broadcasting act after a complainant objected to a number of broadcasts, claiming they were “abusive” to other religious beliefs, such as Buddhism and Hinduism.

Christian Radio said they had imposed “significant measures” to prevent offensive material being broadcast in the future, adding: “Premier Radio was launched in 1995 and this is the first time a complaint has been upheld against us.”

The authority considered 105 complaints about programming and advertising on UK commercial radio in its latest quarterly review. It upheld six relating to misleading adverts and one concerning offensive content.

Premier Christian Radio, which has been enjoying a period of growth recently, saw its weekly reach increase by 1.9% to 161,000 in the latest set of RAJAR results, released today (see Newsline).
