Christmas Viewing – BBC1 Wins Battle

BBC1 can celebrate achieving a 10.5% Xmas lead over both the main terrestrial commercial channels; for the week ending 31/12/95 all individuals over the age of four spent 13 hours and 14 minutes watching BBC1 which translated to a 40.1% share of viewing and 3 hours 35 minutes watching BBC2 (10.9% share of viewing). These figures were comfortably ahead of ITV and Channel 4, whose hours viewed and share were 10 hours 23 minutes (31.5%) and 2 hours and 58 minutes (9.0%) respectively.

The top rated programme over the three day Christmas period was the BBC1 comedy One Foot In The Grave which attracted an audience of 17.77 million. Other top programmes over the festive period were; Keeping Up Appearances which was watched by 16.73 million people and the films Hook which was watched by 12.55 million people and Patriot Games which had 11.94 million viewers.

Total television viewing for the week has risen by 5.5% compared to the same week last year.
