Chrysalis Bids To Extend LBC Format To The West Midlands

Chrysalis has announced its intention to extend its LBC format outside of London by bidding for the third regional FM licence for the West Midlands.
The radio group plans to use the licence, due to be advertised by the Radio Authority next month, to launch a sister station to the recently acquired LBC (see Chrysalis Strengthens London Offering With LNR Acquisition).
The new station, called WBC, will be 100% speech and will provide a range of news, information and entertainment designed to compete with BBC Radio WM. It will also feature current affairs, comedy and a variety of competitions and quizzes.
According to Chrysalis, WBC will be tuned-in to the West Midlands, presenting and intelligent but often irreverent look at the news and views of the region.
Paul Fairburn, managing director of Chrysalis Radio Midlands, said: “This licence provides an exciting opportunity for the West Midlands to have a genuinely distinctive speech station and provide a compelling alternative to the BBC.”
The station will be owned entirely by Chrysalis, which will enable substantial investment in programming through a shared infrastructure with 100.7 Heart FM.
