Cinema Admissions Fall During September

The latest figures from the Cinema Advertising Association (CAA) show that total admissions for August rose by 12% year on year, while those for September dropped by 15% compared to the same period last year.

Admissions during August were boosted by the continued success of Star Wars: Episode One – The Phantom Menace which continued to take in a high proportion of the box office figures. Average weekly admissions for this month were 3.5 million, an increase of 6% on those taken during July (see Cinema Admission Figures Continue To Break Records).

The decrease in sales during September can be explained by the lack of a hugely successful film during the month, as compared to the same period last year, which was showing three of the highest grossing films of the year during September.

Overall admissions for the third quarter (July-September) were up 14% year on year and up 37% on the previous year.
