Cinema Admissions Show Promising Start To Year
Cinema admissions have seen a 20% year on year increase during the first four months of the year, despite April’s admissions total being down on the previous year’s.
Cinema admissions during last month reach 13.2 million, compared to 14 million in April 2001, when Bridget Jones’ Diary the number two film in the annual top ten, was released. However, the CAA is confident that the industry is on course to achieve an end of year admissions estimate of 174 million.
Christine Costello, vice-president of the CAA, said: “Current figures put cinema in a very strong position to deliver excellent value to advertisers in 2002. We are confident that this trend will continue throughout this year, with so many excellent films still to be released over the summer months.”
The month’s top film was family animation Ice Age which took £7m at the box office. The home-grown football film Bend It Like Beckham came second, taking £6.7m, while About A Boy achieved the third highest opening of the year with £3.1m, took fourth place with £4.6m over the month.
