Cinema Admissions Soar During July

UK cinema admissions for July totalled 15 million, an increase of 8% on the same period last year. Making this July the highest month on record since 1971.

An average of 3.38 million visits a week were made to see films including Minority Report, Scooby-Doo and Austin Powers: Goldmember. Minority Report topped the July box office charts, taking £16 million. While Scooby-Doo benefited from the start of the summer holidays taking £14.3 million.

Debbie Chalet, president of the CAA, commented: “2002 UK cinema admissions are set to be the highest annual total for thirty one years, more and more people are going to the cinema, more and more films are being released, there is no reason why this is not set to continue.” The CAA is confident that cinema admissions in 2002 will exceed the industry prediction of 174 million, the largest annual total since 1971. The coming months are set to be a summer of sequels, with the release of Men In Black 2, Harry Potter and the new Lord Of The Rings film:The Two Towers.
