Classic Demands Digital Review Of National Licences

Classic FM has warned that if it is to compete in a digital future, then it is vital that there is a review of the structure of the three national commercial radio licences:

Classic FM have issued points outlining views on DAB:

  • While wishing to play a full part in digital developments, the present “unsatisfactory nature” of the National Radio Licence arrangements prevent us from committing ourselves to a long term policy for digital audio broadcasting.
  • The proposed review of INR licences is an essential pre-requisite to DAB. Classic believes that INR licences should have parity in length with Channel 3 ITV licences, with clear quality thresholds supervised by the Radio Authority.
  • Classic will have to persuade listeners to switch to new receiving equipment which will involve large initial outlay. Financial incentives should be considered for broadcasters to stimulate DAB growth.
