Comcast has signed an agreement in the US with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to sell the studio’s titles through its Xfinity On Demand digital store, meaning that Xfinity customers will be able to purchase Sony Pictures films and TV shows before their DVD release.
Among the first titles available for purchase will be American Hustle, with The Amazing Spiderman, 21 Jump Street and Breaking Bad set to follow in the coming weeks.
Comcast customers are able to purchase films and TV shows – often weeks before they are available to rent or buy on DVD – and store them in a cloud, where they are available to watch at any time on a number of devices.
“The Sony Pictures library is a terrific addition to our rapidly expanding offering of hit films and TV shows available for purchase,” said Michael Schreiber, senior vice president of content acquisition at Comcast Cable.
“The response to the digital store has been encouraging and tells us our customers love the flexibility and ease of purchasing content directly from Xfinity On Demand.”
Man Jit Singh, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, added: “We deeply value our relationship with Comcast and look forward to working closely with them to meet the needs of all audiences.”
Last month Comcast and Netflix reached a “mutually beneficial” deal to provide Comcast’s US broadband customers with high-quality Netflix video.
