Commercial Digital Radio Begins Broadcasting

Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) began transmitting in the London area yesterday by broadcasting seven commercial radio stations.

The Radio Authority has licensed National Transcommunications Ltd (NTL) as a multiplex provider to transmit Classic FM, Heart 106.2, Kiss 100 FM, Melody FM, Sunrise Radio, Talk Radio UK and Virgin 105.8 FM on DAB. The main benefits from broadcasting on digital are CD-quality sound, lack of interference (especially in cars) and compression of signals which will allow more stations to broadcast.

It is the second launch of DAB in the UK, the first being in Birmingham last year. Most other European countries are currently testing the new technology.

Andrew Sukawaty, NTL’s chief executive, commented: “There is no doubt that the future of broadcasting is digital. We have successfully championed the cause of digital television and now we want to do the same for radio. It will provide better quality and expanded choice for the consumer.” Radio Authority: 0171 430 2724
