Commercial Radio Complaints Fall In Q2 2002

The Radio Authority received 101 complaints about programming and advertising on UK commercial radio during the second quarter of 2002, compared with 200 in the first quarter, according to its latest Programming And Advertising Review.

Between April and June this year the Authority received 52 complaints regarding programming and 49 concerning advertising and sponsorship. Seven programming complaints were upheld, compared with 12 for advertising.

One ‘yellow card’ warning was issued by the Authority to 107.8 FM Thames Radio because of concern that a minimum level of speech as defined in the station’s format was not being achieved. It was also found that the station was over relying on recent music at the expense of older material.

Last month the Radio Authority confirmed that eight applications have been made for the Greater London ILR licence currently held by Liberty Radio (see Eight Applications Received For Liberty Licence). As well as a re-application by the existing licensee, there have also been a number of applications from stations catering for the Asian community, two for children’s stations and one from Saga radio, which caters for older audiences.
