Commercial Radio Revenue Continues To Outperform Market In 1999

Advertising revenue for the UK’s commercial radio industry continued to grow at a faster pace than the display advertising market during 1999, making radio the fastest-growing medium for the sixth year out of seven. According to the Advertising Association’s Quarterly Survey of Advertising Expenditure, as analysed by the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB), radio enjoyed growth of 11.1% last year to take a total of £464.4 million.

The whole display marketplace shows growth of 5.8% during 1999, according to the Advertising Association figures. Television and newspapers also outperformed the market last year with growths of 7.1% and 6.0% respectively. Outdoor’s revenue rose 5.8% annually and magazines showed little growth, at just 0.2%.

Commercial radio’s share of the total display market is also edging up in line with its consistently strong revenues. Radio last year gained 0.2% points to command a share of 5.5% of the market. TV took 43.8% of display and newspapers 26.9% with total revenues of £3.7 billion and £2.3 billion respectively.
