Commission for Racial Equality Responds To ASA’s Ruling

In response to the Advertising Standards Authority’s (ASA) decision to uphold complaints against the CRE’s latest poster campaign, run in late September, (see Newsline), the Commission has released another ad.

Created by Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper, and run in The Times on Monday, the ad features a list of stark statistics about racial discrimination all under the headline “The Campaign For Racial Equality Is Sorry…”

The CRE expressed disappointment in the ASA’s decision to uphold complaints against the initial stages of the campaign, and Sir Herman Ousley commented: “We are faced with deep rooted complacency on the issue of race and many people are not comfortable talking about it. We believe the methods we have used are justified by the continuing levels of public apathy towards racism.”

Although the ad also features an apology to those who found the initial campaign offensive, Sir Herman Ousley commented: “When we launched the campaign we were dealing with complacency. Our aim was to get a response and we got a reaction. We aimed to get people talking about this subject again and they are.”
