Competition Commission Extends BSkyB/Vivendi Investigation
The Competition Commission has announced today that it is to extend its investigation of French group Vivendi’s purchase of a stake in BSkyB. The arrival of late information had led to a lengthening of the probe which is now due for completion on 24 March.
The proposed acquisition of a stake in the British broadcaster was referred to the Competition Commission last year by Stephen Byers who was concerned about the effects of further consolidation on the film and sports rights markets (see Cable & Wireless Communications “Disappointed” By Stephen Byers Move).
A spokesperson for the Commission said today that the new evidence would need to be “carefully considered to ensure the correct decision is reached”. It will hand the case to the Department of Trade and Industry when the new evidence has been assessed.
