Complainants Target Sex On Television

The Broadcasting Standards Commission(BSC) has received a large volume of complaints concerned with the sexual content or innuendo of television and radio broadcasts. The regulator upheld complaints against 11 different programmes in its latest report.

Mark Radcliffe’s BBC Radio show and Coronation Street all drew accusations of sexual innuendo. Documentaries by Channel 4 (Cutting Edge and Fetishes) and ITV (Vice – The Sex Trade) all received complaints which the watchdog upheld concerned with programme content, it’s implications and excessively graphic discussion of sexual behaviour. Other complaints involved the scheduling of particular programmes. An episode of BBC1’s Byker Grove was ruled inappropriate for broadcasting at a time when children were likely to be in the audience, and the pop music show CD:UK on ITV was pulled up for broadcasting videos containing sexual content on a Saturday morning

Even This Morning, hosted by Richard and Judy, received complaints about nudity and simulated sex, which the BSC upheld. According to reports, the regulator has also received complaints over Channel 4’s 2 new dramas – Sex In The City and Queer As Folk – about their sexual content. Details of these will be published in the next month’s report.
