Condé Nast Ups Investment In GQ

Condé Nast has announced that it is increasing its investment in GQ as part of a move to raise the profile of the magazine and boost its circulation figures.
The investment, rumoured to be around £250,000, will see GQ expand editorially and from January next year the magazine will include an 20 extra pages per issue and will feature a series of high-profile columnists including former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Peter Mandelson and Robbie Williams.
The magazine is also expanding its editorial staff and Tom Sykes, formerly of the Evening Standard, has been appointed assistant features editor. GQ‘s editor, Dylan Jones, said: “We are making a massive investment in the title and hope that the increased number of pages and extra features will strengthen GQ‘s position at the quality end of the men’s market.”
The investment comes at a difficult time for the magazine industry, which is feeling the effects of the advertising downturn. Growing competition and a dwindling readership caused the men’s magazine sector to see circulation drop by 2.4% in the latest set of ABC results and GQ, which has seen circulation fall recently (see below), reported a year on year drop of 7.7% to 127,518 for the six month period ending in June 2001.
