Confidence In UK Economy Is Lowest For 4 Years

A new report by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) shows that business confidence in the UK economy is at its lowest level for four years.

The Marketing Trends Survey reveals that UK marketing managers are becoming increasingly less confident of reaching their sales targets, with 43% predicting that they will not achieve them.

“The results of the survey are cause for concern,” says CIM director general, Steve Cuthbert. “It is clear that for many companies, when they put together their sales plan at the beginning of 1998, the possibility of a slowdown in the economy was a glimmer in the forecaster’s eye and not taken too seriously. But now, as the year-end moves into focus, it is clear that sales are doing less well than expected and a large group of marketers consequently expect to miss targets,” he added.

As a result, the CIM Confidence Index has fallen to 91.2, its lowest ever level.
