Consumer Spending Set To Fall

The Chartered Institute of Marketing’s Quarterly State of the Market report, published today, predicts that consumer spending growth for 1997 will be lower than last year in all three categories: durables, non-durables and services.

The report claims that pre-election nerves are hitting consumer spending and slowing down the economy. The CIM does, however, believe that the weakening in the economy will be short-lived with consumer spending picking-up after the election
