Coronation Street Bloodbath Delivers Viewers

ITV1 scored a ratings victory last night with a special double bill of Coronation Street pulling in 60% of the available audience.
According to unofficial overnight figures from BARB, the first instalment of the soap attracted an average of 15.3 million viewers and an audience share of 60.2%. The second part, scheduled to begin after EastEnders had ended on BBC1, drew an audience of 15.6 million, which equates to a 57.2% share of viewing.
A spokesperson for ITV said that the show was one of the most watched episodes of recent years, as viewers tuned in to see Richard Hillman kill off Tracy Shaw’s character, Maxine.
It is understood that a surge measuring 1,500 mega-watts swept the nation at the end of the second episode, as viewers boiled kettles, switched on lights and opened fridges. The National Grid has attributed this surge to the large audience turning off just in time to avoid the adverts.
