Cover-Man Beckham Ups Demand For Marie Claire

IPC Media is to increase the print run for the June issue of Marie Claire after the announcement that man-of-the-moment David Beckham is to be the magazine’s first male cover star led to an increased demand from retailers.

Publishing director Rita Lewis said: “This is the first time prior to going on sale that retailers are calling us demanding more issues. The excitement surrounding Beckham on the cover has created expectation of an exceptional sale. We are delighted to announced we have put Marie Claire back on press to satisfy demand- the retailers know when it makes sense to cash in.”

The attention gained from the Beckham cover could prove a welcome boost to the glossy, as the title’s ABC figures in recent years have shown a falling off from the heyday of the mid and late nineties, when circulation topped 450,000. However, in the last couple of years, the strength of market leader Cosmopolitan and the entry of contenders such as Glamour have taken their toll, and in the July to December ABC audit Marie Claire’s circulation stood at just over 380,000.
