Crumbs Of Hope For Cookie Saving Campaign

The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) has had some positive news for its campaign to prevent the use of internet “cookies” being banned by a legislation it believes could cost UK businesses millions of pounds.

Danny Meadows-Klue, the IAB’s chairman and chief executive, said: “While it is too early to pop champagne corks, the IAB has succeeded in convincing Ministers to reject an explicit opt-in regime that could have cost UK businesses hundreds of millions- £187m within just the advertising industry.”

The amendment to the legislation concerns conditions on the use of cookies, namely an obligation to provide users with clear and comprehensive information in advance about the purpose of the cookies and to offer them the possibility to refuse.

The IAB has joined with ISBA and the IPA to protest against the EU legislation proposals, launching a “Save our Cookies” campaign (see Protests At Cookie Cutting Proposals).
