Culture Secretary Launches Report Into Creative Industry

At the end of last week, the Culture Secretary Chris Smith launched a report into the economic importance and potential of the UK creative industries.

Such industries include publishing, software, design, music, television and radio, advertising and designer fashion.

The report reveals that the creative industries generate revenues of about £60 billion per year, and export an estimated £7.5 billion per year in creative goods and services. In excess of 1.4 million people are already employed in the sector, and it has the potential to create 50,000 new jobs over the next three years, according to the Government’s creative industry task force.

In regard to the report, Mr. Smith said: “With a growth rate of 5% the creative industries are generating new jobs and new wealth for Britain faster than any other part of the economy. No wonder they attract some of the most talented people in our country. It is Government’s job to foster a climate in which that talent can flourish, and this report will help us to do just that.”
