Dr Brian Smith, chairman of Cable & Wireless, has announced that he is to retire from the company with effect from the Annual General Meeting in June 1998. He will be succeeded by Sir Ralph Robins, chairman of Rolls-Royce and non-executive director of C&W since April 1994.
