CWC Offers Kids’ Net Vet

Cable and Wireless Communications (CWC) is to pave the way in the children’s internet market by becoming the first UK ISP to monitor web pages for child-friendly sites.

Planet Kids, which will launch on 23 August and is aimed at 5-11 year olds, will charge subscribers £2.95 per month to provide access to approximately 50,000 vetted sites which are guaranteed to be suitable for children. Using ‘Sniffer’ software it will bar access to any sites not included on the ‘whitelist’. According to CWC, this system will provide a more comprehensive service than filter packages currently available which merely block unsuitable words and images. The only search engine available will be the children’s service Yahooligans.

Marketing director of Cable and Wireless Communications Janet Somerville said: “There is an increasing awareness in families of the internet’s role as a powerful educational tool and source of entertainment. Planet Kids has been developed to allow parents peace of mind while children are accessing the internet”.
