CWC Takes 100,000 Digital Subscribers
UK cable company Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) is about to announce that it has signed up over 100,000 customers to its digital television service. The digital cable service is gradually being rolled out around the country, with the launch taking place last July in Manchester (see Cable & Wireless Communications Rolls Out Digital TV Offerings).
In just over six months the service has been developed and rolled out to areas in the South-East of the country. Of the 100,000 customers signed up so far, around half are new to CWC; the remaining 50% have upgraded their existing analogue cable TV service to digital. The digital service offers customers a variety of interactive services, including shopping and banking, and a ‘walled garden’ version of the internet, available via the television and including email.
This month CWC’s cable infrastructure will grow to cover 1.5 million UK homes – not all of which will currently be able to receive digital cable. The company is currently awaiting clearance from the Competition Commission to proceed with the proposed £8.2 billion merger with NTL (see Cable & Wireless Communications “Disappointed” By Stephen Byers Move). If the two groups complete the merger, the combined business will have access to over seven and a half million cable homes.
Meanwhile rival cable group, Telewest Communications, is rolling out its digital TV offerings following a Midlands launch in October last year (see Telewest Launches Digital Service). Telewest has itself just set out the terms of a merger with pay-TV content provider Flextech (see Telewest And Flextech Agree Terms Of £2.26bn Merger).
