The media companies Kirch Group and CLT-Ufa are to step up efforts to persuade the EC to permit them to form a digital pay-TV joint venture. Karel Van Miert, Commissioner responsible for competition policy, has criticised their plan and said that the merger in its current form is unacceptable. His doubt appears to be that any closer link between the two companies in the sphere of pay-TV will also lead to closer coordination of their plans in free-TV, a suggestion which the two companies have rebutted. A ruling from the Commission on this subject is expected in late May this year.
